what is the difference between southern and nothern cooking?

I need to find the difference between nothern and southern cooking back in the CIVIL WAR? What is a WOW factore for my topic? please helllp! :(

I think you need to look back for cookbooks of the period or just before the war. Northern cooking is going to be using wheat while southern has more corn and rice. Southern cooking will have sugar from cane and honey while northern will have beet sugar and maple syrup. Because of the heat and greater distance from ice and ice houses the foods preserved are different. Southern plants including rice, okra, and greens are less likely to be part of northern cooking. Similarly asparagus, blueberries, etc. Are northern plants and don’t get cold enough or die in the heat of the south. Also, eastern northern cooking nearer the ocean will be different than midwestern cooking.

Nashville Locals: Where can I get really regional Southern cooking in Nashville?

I will be visiting Nashville for the very first time. I am looking for a local place that serves really good (regional style) southern cooking.

I have friends who live in Memphis. When I went there, they took me to some great places (in Memphis). Unfortunately, I don’t know anyone who lives in Nashville. So I hope this forum can offer some good recommendations.

There are so many places in Nashville to get good ol’ southern cooking. I moved here (to TN) last May from Illinois and love food, the best help for me has been those local and citysearch pages. Honestly, almost any town you go to around here is going to have country cookin’. Haven’t tried this one restaurant yet but I will send you a link, it is supposed to be good and had lots of good reviews online. It is called Monell’s and like I said I haven’t tried it yet. I do know they serve family style and you sit at a big table with other people, families even go there for Thanksgiving.

What are the best recipes for southern cooking?

You see , I want to cook southern meals because everyone is always saying how wonderfully delicious they are! I just don’t know which recipes are actually southern food. I was thinking of moving down there, but I think that may be too drastic…
