Your Questions About Good Home Cooking

Lizzie asks…

on my own now and miss home cooked good food , fed up of takeaways , any ideas of recipes for cooking for one?

Herschel Lawhorn answers:

Get yourself a slow cooker they are amazing its a big electric pot.Put aload of veg and meat in switch it on and hey presto you come home to a hot stew, the beauty of these is that they take 8 hours to cook ,so prepare all your veg the night before switch it on before you go to work and when you get home its ready to dish up and you’ll get loads for a couple of days.I just love mine.

Seeking easy beginner collard greens recipe?

My husband has been on a search for a good “southern style” collard greens….I found one recipe with 2 lb greens, kkosher salt, crushed pepper, sliced onion, water, etc. I have bacon to use for flavoring- can anyone help a new wife make my hubby a special anniversary dinner? (I can’t believe in all the markets around our place only the korean food stores have prepared collards, I thought it was a true southern dish)

Mandy asks…

God, I think I just want to go home…10 points?

Ok, so as of right now I’m spending the entire summer (till August 12th) in Jacksonville, Florida with my Aunt, Uncle and other Aunt. I’ve been here since June 10th. Why am I here? Well, my parents, my “father” and I do not get along but me and my mom are pretty tight, so they decided to send me here because apparently “it’ll be good for me and I won’t just spend my summer asleep” Though this has started to not really be the way I want to spend my summer between freshman year of high school and sophomore year.

Your Questions About Southern Cooking Bible

Lizzie asks…

Where’s a good place for a silicon valley girl to go to in the south?

I’m 20 and I live in San Francisco where I smoke and drink and club and I’ve spent a few summers in LA. I love culture and cooking and traveling and partying and painting and science and movies. So stereotype away, I’m that kind of girl. I’m also jewish (culturally). I’ve always wanted to live in the deep south for a few month because I think it would be kind of funny and interesting and just such a change to actually be in a place I’ve always stereotyped as having an abundance of charming bible thumpers. Please take no offense, I’m genuinely curious about how the south really is. But if I was going to live a very very southern place that would still be fun for a young person and have really good food, where could I go? Someplace not too expensive would be nice too
I mean somewhere very dixie-ish if that makes sense, like not New Orleans
